Demonstrating proficiency: Midwifery practice 4

Module code: MW4011

This module is facilitated by a combination of lectures, online learning packages, clinical skills/simulation workshops and clinical practice and is where you will learn to provide universal and additional midwifery and neonatal care in partnership with midwives and other health care practitioners with appropriate supervision.

This module provides you with the opportunity to develop effective communication and interpersonal skills in leading a ward-based midwifery team with support from a practising midwife/practice supervisor/leadership learning set facilitator, supporting childbearing women and their families in a range of normal and complex conditions. You will critically evaluate maternity care utilising contemporary evidence to compare a small caseload of women with universal and additional health and social care needs during pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period.

There will be appropriate clinical placements across the range of maternity services, including caseloading experiences. During the placements, you will continue developing your knowledge and skills to provide the evidence within the Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement (MORA) that you have finally met the NMC Standards of proficiency for midwives, the EU requirements for midwifery practice and the UNICEF-Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) standards by the end of the programme. In addition the Systematic physical examination of the newborn infant portfolio and the Non-Medical Prescribing (readiness) portfolio will be completed during this module in order for you to be deemed proficient in the systematic physical examination of the newborn infant and be “prescribing ready” at the point of registration.

You will have access to e-learning for numeracy and medicines calculations through Safe-Medicate throughout.
