Immigration Law

Module code: LW3460

The refugee ‘crisis’ in Europe and the US and the fallout from the Brexit referendum mean that immigration law has become one of the most topical and exciting areas of law over the past few years. But what does the law actually say about it? In this module you’ll learn about the history of migration, its legal regulation and discover the sources of migration law in Britain. You'll then go on to discuss the main intellectual and political controversies in the fields of nationality, immigration and asylum law in Britain.

There are various legal rules governing British citizenship and the system of immigration control and law in Britain, and by looking at immigration categories, your research will explore how Immigration Law is currently practised. Some of the topics that will be covered are deportation of foreign nationals, as well as the implications of European Union law and the European Convention on Human Rights for immigration rights in Britain.
