Slavery in the Americas

This module examines the history of slavery in two very different American contexts – Virginia and Jamaica – from the 17th century to the abolition of slavery in the 19th century. You’ll be examining the experiences of enslaved people of African descent and the complex and diverse ways in which their lives were shaped by major economic, political and cultural developments.

Many aspects will be explored from the origins of slavery, to what led English settlers to build economies based on African slave labour. The communities, cultures and rebellions that were constructed by slaves will also be looked at, as well as the forms of control slaveholders employed.

You’ll then assess the relationship between slavery and ideologies of race and freedom, and compare and contrast ideas in seminars. By identifying patterns and differences within large scale historical processes, you’ll gain a thorough understanding of this topic.
