Anglo-Saxon England to Alfred

You’ll be studying Anglo-Saxon England from 500–900 AD, this is the proto-historic ‘migration and settlement’ period through to the well-documented reign of King Alfred.

To start you'll be looking at migration and continuity, conversion and Christianisation, saints’ cults as well as the presence and function of religion in this era. You’ll be investigating the networks of learning, communication and trade through to the workings of kinship and power.

Different types of primary evidence survive from the distant past, including textual, visual, manuscripts and archaeological sources, which you can use to build up your understanding of this period. The module will culminate in the discussion of ‘English’ identity in relation to Viking attacks, ethnicity and identity.
