All Bourgeois Now? Class in History

Module code: HS2237

How does class consciousness come about through economic change and political action? What are the cultural expressions of class identity? This module shines a light on class in modern Germany and another country, while contesting the meanings and values historians have projected onto class.

It is of the upmost importance to analyse social relations and social conflict, while considering if there are other ways of conceptualising society. You’ll also be comparing class identity to other social, cultural and political identities to weigh up the importance of certain identities to individuals.

Your own research might explore class as a cultural product, constructed through language and consumer behaviour, or it might consider the complications that arise when investigating race and gender, and the divisions within classes.
