Gender History

Module code: HS2231

This module looks at the ideas and realities of gender, and gender relations, in a historical context. You’ll be examining how women and men saw themselves and each other, how they were expected to behave – and how they actually behaved.

In previous years this module has focused on Medieval England and Victorian Britain. You’ll be examining themes which encompass the whole of the human experience, including gender relations in family life, education, the workplace, religious activity and power structures. Both the similarities and differences in the concepts and realities of femininity and masculinity will be analysed, as well as the constant reinterpretation of gender roles in society from the past through to the present day.
