Modernity and Tradition

This module examines art, design and visual culture in Western Europe from the mid-19th century to the Second World War, through the lens of ‘modernity’ and ‘tradition’. Through selected case studies, the module examines the relationships and tensions between new and old during this period, and scrutinises the extent to which ‘modernism’ can be considered as a break from the past.
