Environment and Development

Module code: GY2151

Environmental change and issues of ‘development’, aid, migration and poverty alleviation are everywhere in contemporary media stories. As some of the most urgent, contemporary challenges that affect us all, whether in the Global North or Global South, this is hardly surprising. However, understanding and addressing these complex, interlinked issues remains very challenging.

In this module you will explore current debates around development, environmental management and change and study their interconnections to shed light on important events and issues such as the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, Sustainable Development Goals and the contemporary migration crisis. We will analyse these contemporary challenges and their implications for our shared futures through critical approaches to the very idea of ‘development’, through examination of issues of power, knowledge and justice and by recognition of diverse voices and environmental values.
