Narrative: Theories, Texts, and Practices

Module code: EN7234

This module will introduce you to a range of narrative theory, enabling you to carry out analyses of narrative texts of different media and sociohistorical contexts and to critique narrative practices. It will take an interdisciplinary approach to narrative analysis. The theoretical models considered will include structuralist perspectives, discourse-analytic theories that consider narratives in their social context, and some of the more recent approaches to narrative that are considered 'postmodern'. A range of narratives will be analysed, incorporating written, oral, and visual media as well as literary and non-literary forms and texts from various historical periods. Students are encouraged to collect their own data for analysis and to develop a critical stance towards the range of narrative frameworks available for application.
