Radio Communications

Module code: EG7023

In this module you will learn the relevant factors in the design of radio communication systems. In particular, service planning and propagation prediction tools will be introduced for a number of systems at different radio frequencies and in different environments, varying from simple formulae to computer-based techniques. You will learn to identify the relevant physical processes affecting radio propagation in different systems. Some of the topics on radio communications which were presented in the module ‘Radio Systems’ will be examined in more depth.

The module will be delivered through a series of lectures, and computer-based practical sessions. The theoretical aspects of the module will be complemented with extensive practical exercises using modelling packages and prediction tools. At the end of the module you should have developed a broad understanding of the requirements for the planning and operation of a number of radio communication systems together with an appreciation of the limitations of these systems. Subjects which will be studied include:

Propagation:

  • Radio channel characteristics: for example, the effect of the ionosphere on HF communication systems
  • Simulation: by understanding the physical mechanisms which affect radio propagation enables their effects can be simulated
  • Predictions: the ability to predict the behaviour of radio systems is crucial to the design of communication systems

Systems:

  • Point-to-point and network: for example, indoor wireless networking
  • Mobile communication networks
  • Broadcasting: Even in the age of the internet, radio (and television) broadcasting continues to be of importance
