Mentoring, Coaching and Leadership

Module code: ED7432

You will explore different notions of mentoring and coaching, considering a range of practices found in educational settings together with the relationships that these practices have with models of effective leadership. The effective development and supervision of mentors/coaches will be one area under discussion (for example, supporting coaches to develop their skills whilst ensuring they do not cross the boundary into counselling). You will also consider potential tensions between mentoring/coaching principles and practices, such as building confidential relationships in contexts where reporting on performance is required. For the assessed element of the module, you will write an essay that relates academic literature to an organisational context. The assignment will include options to report on a small scale study, or write a policy review or a critical review of existing research.

This module will appeal to those responsible for the professional development of colleagues and/or leadership of those in training as well as for people who lead peer tutoring or other mentoring/coaching programmes with young people in a variety of educational contexts.
