Global Policing

Module code: CR3032

Understanding crime and policing is no longer restricted to regional, national or international contexts. We are increasingly witnessing the global influences on local policing practices and the relationship between the police and local communities. Much of policing studies has focused on policing in particular societies and communities, however this module focuses on the role, practice and experience of policing internationally. Throughout this module, we explore the relationship between globalisation and policing. We will examine the development, role and function of organisations in the global policing architecture, the national policing agencies with transnational responsibilities and the role of private policing internationally. This module critically considers the assumptions underpinning notions of risk, security and citizenship. By comparing how policing is practised and experienced across the globe, we challenge our assumptions about the role of the police and how policing should be performed.
