The significance of leadership to twenty-first century policing cannot overestimated. The decisions of police leaders have important consequences for individuals and communities. In this module, we examine the social, economic and political challenges facing contemporary police leaders and the relationship between police leadership and police occupational culture. In the lectures and workshops, we will explore the complexity and variation of police culture(s). We will critically examine the distinctive nature of police occupational culture and the inevitability and functionality of police culture as an inherent feature of police work. By taking this module, you will develop a critical understanding of leadership, culture and organisational reform in the police.
