Crime and Technology

Module code: CR2020

This module introduces you to a range of critical issues at the forefront of the study of criminology in today's society. You'll explore the various ways in which technology (information communication technologies, the internet of things, mobile communications, transport, biometrics) modifies opportunities for existing crime and creates opportunities for new forms of crime. You'll also examine: how this changes the landscape of criminal behaviour, the potential ways in which it can be used for crime prevention and policing, and the implications for technology on future crime.

The module also introduces you to the ways in which technology can be used as a form of social control, and the impact that this may have on issues of privacy and liberty. You’ll be assessing and comparing the technologies used to prevent a range of different crimes.
