Infection and Immunity

Module code: BS3012

In this module we will take an advanced interdisciplinary approach to understanding the molecular and cellular processes involved in immunological and infectious disease conditions. You will study the mammalian immune system in detail, including specific and non-specific immune responses, and you will explore the molecular and genetic basis of strategies employed by microorganisms to invade host tissue, avoid host defence mechanisms, and proliferate at sites of infection. We will also consider the molecular and cellular approaches used to investigate infectious and immunological diseases.

Topics covered

  • Immunochemistry
  • Cellular immunology
  • Phagocyte function
  • Microbial virulence factors
  • Intracellular parasitism
