Genomes

Module code: BS2009

This module will illustrate the techniques of modern molecular genetics that are being applied to investigate the organisation, evolution and maintenance of the integrity of genomes, and provides “hands on” experience of many of the relevant techniques through practical sessions. A wide range of genomes are considered including those of bacteria, yeast, insects and humans.

Topics covered

  • Organisation of the principal components of prokaryotic genomes
  • Structure and composition of eukaryotic chromosomes
  • Organisation of protein-coding genes in higher eukaryotes
  • Plant organelle genomes
  • DNA replication, recombination and repair
  • Molecular and genome evolution
  • Sequencing of microbial and  human genomes
