The archaeological study of the last 500 years can enrich our understanding of many kinds of people in the past, from potentates in Benin, Khoikhoi in South Africa, and agricultural labourers in the north of Ireland to settlers in Virginia. You will develop a critical understanding of the processes of social and cultural change from a global perspective, and develop skills in the interpretation of material culture to address social and historical questions.

  • Discussion of archaeological issues related to later historical archaeology.
  • Interpretation of different forms of material culture (including from excavation sites, museum collections, standing buildings, historical landscapes) to address social and historical questions.
