Landscape Archaeology

This module introduces the theoretical issues underpinning landscape archaeology, and the range of techniques in the human and natural sciences that can be combined in the broad field of landscape studies. You will learn to assess the different strengths and weaknesses of these techniques and their appropriate application within problem solving research and professional practice. On completion of this module you will be able to:

• Identify and critically discuss the scholarly background and past approaches to defining and interpreting landscapes.
• Show understanding of recent and current theoretical assessments of landscapes and settlement.
• Demonstrate critical awareness of the role of research design in exploring and interpreting landscapes of varied dates.
• Debate and define methods of assessment, recording and interpretation.
• Apply a critical understanding of the techniques available to landscape archaeologists to investigate, record and to interpret landscapes of varied dates.
