Archaeology of the Roman World

Module code: AR2556

Beginning with a discussion about why the archaeological study of the Roman world is important, and worth carrying out, this module explores the city of Rome in some detail. This is followed by explorations of the archaeological evidence for a number of issues such as Roman religion, the expansion of the Roman Empire, and what Roman death and burial can tell us about life as a Roman. The concept of ‘Romanisation’ is debated  in some depth, along with other recent ways of understanding the power and domination that came with the Roman Empire in many parts of the known world.
