The Medieval Mediterranean World

Module code: AR2043

This module will explore key developments in the history and archaeology of the Mediterranean world, with a broad time-frame of c.AD500 to AD1500. Beginning with the huge transformations under way as the old Roman Empire, which had once united the lands of the Mediterranean, came apart, the module will investigate something of the diversity of the different histories which were to emerge in the Byzantine, Islamic and western parts of the region. The module establishes the basic frameworks (chronological, geographical, historical) for engaging with key themes and issues relating to the archaeology of the medieval Mediterranean.
