Classical Archaeology

Module code: AR1554

This module begins by looking at what is often called the ‘Dark Age’ or Archaic period, from 1000-479 BC, and continues into Classical Greece (approximately 479-300 BC) up to Alexander the Great. This allows us to understand how such things as democracy, classical Greek architecture and sculpture developed – things that have had a huge impact on the western world as a whole. This module then looks at the rise of the Roman world, from its beginnings as a Republic, right through to the end of the Empire in the 4th century AD.  Economy, trade, buildings, settlement, architecture and towns are all explored in order to understand what made the Roman world so successful.
