Troy and the Trojan War

Module code: AH3073

In this module we will take an interdisciplinary approach, considering Troy from a range of perspectives. We will look at the archaeology of the site, including not only the Bronze Age but also the Iron Age, the Hellenistic age and the Roman occupation. We will also explore the cultural significance of Troy throughout classical antiquity, examining literary works such as the poems of Homer, the works of Virgil, and the plays of classical Athens, plus visual art such as depictions of Trojan scenes on pottery, wall paintings and in sculptures. In addition, we will discuss the value of Troy as a political symbol and cultural capital, not only in relation to classical antiquity, but also in the modern world.
