Leicester Law School offers a number of inspiring opportunities for students in Years 10–13 to find out more about the varied and rewarding career in the legal sector and what it is like to study law at university. If you have any questions about any of the below opportunities, please email schools@le.ac.uk.
All of the events and programmes listed below are completely free for students to take part in. If you wish to hear about new events as and when they become available complete our law interest form.
Events (years 10–13)
21 October 2024, 7.45pm - 10.00pm, Phoenix, 4 Midland Street, Leicester LE1 1TG - Moving People Moving Pictures – Film Showing of Dirty Pretty Things (film rating 15)
Written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, Dirty Pretty Things depicts the challenges facing asylum seekers and irregular migrants in early 2000s Britain. The University of Leicester’s Migration, Mobility and Citizenship Network (MMCN) is partnering with Phoenix cinema to bring this film paired with discussion of how the film represents aspects of international migration and the migrant experience. After the screening there will be a reflection on the film by a member of the MMCN and an opportunity for audience discussion on the migration-related issues raised by the film.
Proof of age may be required (over 15 only).
Saturday 2 November 2024, 10.00am – 3.30pm, University of Leicester Young People’s Law Reform Club (16-21 year olds only)
Have you ever wondered how new laws are made? Get involved in law reform in this one day participatory event at Leicester Law School. You will work with researchers to decide what new laws should be created to address modern challenges in the online lives of young people.
This event will be of particular interest to teenagers who are:
- interested in the rights and protection of young people or in the law-making process
- deciding about going to university or a career in law, government or politics
- considering or completing a degree in the social sciences
- studying Law, Government and Politics, Psychology, Business or Sociology for GSCE/A Level
Age confirmation required at point of booking.
4 November 2024, 6.15pm - 8.45pm, Phoenix, 4 Midland Street, Leicester LE1 1TG - Moving People, Moving Pictures: Representations of Migration on Screen: The Farewell (PG)
The Golden Globe-winning 'The Farewell' focuses on a Chinese-American family to illustrate the immigrant experience of straddling two cultures. The University of Leicester’s Migration, Mobility and Citizenship Network (MMCN) is partnering with Phoenix cinema to bring this film paired with discussion of how the film represents aspects of international migration and the migrant experience. After the screening there will be a reflection on the film by a member of the MMCN and an opportunity for audience discussion on the migration-related issues raised by the film.

Residentials
Each year the University of Leicester runs residential experiences for students in Year 12. During the residential, students are able to take part in practical workshops and experience life as a university student.

Starring Harrison Ford and Ray Liotta, Crossing Over illustrates the experiences of irregular migrants of different nationalities in a post-9/11 US. The University of Leicester’s Migration, Mobility and Citizenship Network (MMCN) is partnering with Phoenix cinema to bring this film paired with discussion of how the film represents aspects of international migration and the migrant experience. After the screening there will be a reflection on the film by a member of the MMCN and an opportunity for audience discussion on the migration-related issues raised by the film.

Progression Programmes (year 12–13)
Our AccessLeicester programme will be open to students (currently in year 12) interested in any area of study (provided it is an option at the University of Leicester) and will involve skills based sessions, both in person and online as well as subject specific content. Students enrolled on AccessLeicester will have the benefit of a reduced offer to study one of our courses as well as receiving the University of Leicester Bursary.
