Events (years 10–13)
Eradicating food poverty using International Human Rights Law
Tuesday 8 July 2025, 5.30pm-6.30pm
A growing number of people are unable to afford or access an adequate amount of food on a daily basis and this affects people globally not just in the UK. In England more specifically, people are relying on charitable food banks as their source of food. Join this session to hear about legal responses to people facing the 'heat or eat' dilemma whereby they have to choose between keeping warm and having enough food. In particular you will explore and can contribute your thoughts or experience/expertise to the role that International Human Rights Law could play in eradicating hunger and supporting sustainable and healthy nutrition.
You will learn about key Human Rights tools and be able to discuss their effectiveness. You will also have a chance to consider who has the duty to ensure that people have sufficient, nourishing, culturally acceptable and sustainably produced food to eat. At the end of the session you will be signposted to further resources including community resources on food banks for you to explore more. You do not need any prior knowledge of the law to attend this talk.
