Course content

This course continues from the Turkish Post-Beginners course, or equivalent previous acquired knowledge. Intermediate Turkish aims to further extend the students’ everyday communication and survival repertoire (for speaking, listening, reading, and writing Turkish), as well as their knowledge of grammar. Various cultural topics are also integrated into the teaching-learning materials.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to...

  • use a wider (from basic to more intricate) range of sentences and frequently used expressions in Turkish that are related to areas of immediate relevance;
    communicate familiar and routine matters and telling stories;
  • describe the backgrounds of environments, the physical and psychological attributes of people;
  • express possibility;
  • compare things;
  • express obligation;
  • give advice;
  • say what you need / what is needed;
  • make complaints and apologies;
  • reporting what someone has said;
  • read and extract key information from short texts, emails and other written documents in Turkish;
  • write messages and short personal emails providing or requesting essential information;
  • demonstrate a deeper understanding of basic aspects of Turkish culture and everyday life.

  • [optional] Teach yourself complete Turkish by David Pollard and Asuman Çelen Pollard

Our approach

This course is taught in Turkish and English. Our programme aims to develop the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as cultural awareness. It provides a good balance between understanding the culture, vocabulary, writing system and grammar structures of the Turkish language and enhancing communication and interaction. It supports comprehensive and productive skills in speech and writing through authentic based activities and guided practice in the use of Turkish language. Students will be encouraged to seek opportunities to learn and practise the four skills outside the classroom taking advantage of learning resources provided by tutors and the programme. Lessons are planned to allow intensive interactive practice with individual feedback and advice on progress.

Progression

Upon completing the Post-Beginners level (2), you can progress onto the Intermediate level (3).
