Chinese (Mandarin)

Chinese FlagChina will play a major role in world affairs in the future. Chinese is the most spoken language in the world! One out of five people is Chinese. If you can speak Chinese, you can communicate with more people different from yourself, and learn things not only about one of history's most enduring civilizations, but of a diverse and rapidly more important country.

Mandarin is a group of related languages used across the north and southwest of China; the common version known as 'standard Chinese' is based on the Beijing dialect. With around a billion speakers across the globe, Mandarin is spoken by more people than any other language (including English) making it a hugely valuable tool for conducting business. It is also a terrific challenge because of the complexity of both spoken and written forms.

Mandarin Chinese Beginners (Level 1)

This is for you if you have no prior knowledge of Mandarin (or so little that you effectively want to start again from scratch). You will learn basic skills to enable you to make yourself understood and to find out information in everyday situations.

Session information: Wednesdays at 6-8pm

Fast Track Level 1

This is for you if you have no prior knowledge of Mandarin (or so little that you effectively want to start again from scratch). You will learn basic skills to enable you to make yourself understood and to find out information in everyday situations. Fast Track courses enable you to complete the level in just one term, instead of two terms.

Session information: Saturdays 10.00am - 2.30pm
Timeline: Term 1: 10 weeks (60 learning hours), starting 17 October 2020, running until 19 December 2020
Fees: Full course, 10 weeks - £210* (60 learning hours)

Mandarin Chinese Post-beginners (Level 2)

This is for you if you can already manage in everyday situations using the present tense and you have reached the A1 level in the ELP self-assessment grid and/or completed the Beginners (Level 1) course.

Session information: Wednesdays 6-8pm
Timeline: Starting 14 October 2020 - running until 24 March 2021
Term 1: 10 weeks (30 learning hours), starting  October 2020; Term 2: 10 weeks (30 learning hours), resuming January 2021

This is for you if you have reached a Level 2 in the ELP self-assessment grid (equivalent to a good grade at GSCE) and/or completed the Post-beginners (Level 2) course.
