Health and wellbeing

We take a holistic, inclusive approach towards positive health and wellbeing.

There are a number of ways in which we achieve this, including offering a range of University events throughout the year, staff benefits, hybrid working (depending on the role), staff networks, training and development and a range of policies that specifically support you at significant points in your personal and working life. We also offer free and confidential 24/7 external employee assistance programme for staff and their immediate family members to support their emotional wellbeing and issues that can affect home-life, work-life and general wellbeing.

Staff inclusion

We are proud to be an inclusive employer. We are a Disability Confident Leader and our four Staff Fora (Disability, LGBT+, Multi-Ethnicity and Women’s) are open to all staff within the University who identify with the relevant equity group. The Fora create a confidential space for staff with shared identities and experiences to come together and generate ideas and provide support.

Payment for staff visas

As part of our commitment to be an employer of choice with an international reach, we wish to support our international staff coming to the UK by reimbursing the cost of visa applications for employees on Skilled Worker or Global Talent visas.

Environmental sustainability

In response to the climate crisis, it is our responsibility to lower our carbon footprint emissions as a university community. All schools and departments have dedicated action plans to reduce their carbon footprint and increase their positive environmental impact. Global biodiversity is also celebrated at our Botanic Garden and the Attenborough Arboretum.

Travel discounts

No matter how you commute to work, there will be discounts to help. We offer a green car salary sacrifice scheme, SmartGo travel discounts, a cycle2work scheme and Arriva Travel Club bus ticket discounts.

Staff volunteering

We have a policy dedicated to volunteering that enables and supports staff as Citizens of Change to be proactive in undertaking voluntary activities that mutually benefit the individual, the University, and the community. Volunteering can have a positive impact on your wellbeing, as two of the five ways of wellbeing are staying connected and giving.
