The success of 50+ years of scientific ocean drilling through the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and its predecessors has given the community in a wealth of legacy material stored in the IODP repositories and databases. Advances in dedicated Earth Science data science software now make it possible to generate digital representations of cores and use these as a primary data source (e.g., through packages like Code for Ocean Drilling Data, or CODD). There is significant scope for integrating these “virtual cores” and data derived from them with re-analysis of the physical legacy cores stored in IODP’s three core repositories. This integration offers one pathway to increase the capacity and utilisation of legacy material.
The 21st Century Drilling Workshop Umbrella Project encompasses four global workshops focussing on revisiting legacy material at all three IODP repositories. In August 2023, the project was kick started by J-DESC’s RECORD ReC23-01 taking place at the KCC (Japan) in August 2023. In 2024, two MagellanPlus 21st Century Drilling workshops were held at the BCR (Bremen) (Workshop 1: April 2024; Workshop 2: November 2024). The final repository-based leg of this project will take place in February 2025, when the USSSP 21st Century Drilling workshop will be held at the GCR (USA). Each workshop team has developed a path tailored to the material being worked on. Now, as we are almost all done with the workshops, work will begin to synthesise best practices and lessons-learned, and delve into the scientific data we collected. We’re looking forward to sharing more of our repository-escapades with you all in future.
