Professor Charalambos Kyriacou's projects

Projects are available in the following areas:

1. Aggression in Drosophila. Using a transcriptomic approach, we have identified a number of genes that are important in ‘Rambo versus Gandhi’ behaviour, and we are using the Drosophila toolkit to determine which parts of the CNS are responsible for this behavioural switch.

2. There are a number of projects available to study sleep and circadian rhythms in the fly. We are interested in:

  1. Natural clock gene variation and how and why this is shaped by natural selection
  2. Finding and studying new clock genes
  3. The way the CNS organises natural circadian behaviour in the fly
  4. The connection between circadian clock genes and seasonal diapause (‘hibernation’)

3. The molecular control of tidal rhythms in the sea louse Eurydice pulchra.

4. Proteomic approaches to studying the fly clock.
