We have a bold vision for enterprise; to help drive the innovation and skills needed to grow the Midlands, UK and world economies. Our ambitions don’t stop there: we will continue to tackle global challenges and transform lives through our research, innovation and new technologies.
Our approach is to build on our international reputation and strengths in sectors such as space, medicine and transport. And to grow our collaborations and impressive portfolio of partnerships with multinationals, leading pharmaceutical companies, small and medium businesses, public and third sector organisations.
A powerhouse for the Midlands
Through its Industrial Strategy and Midlands Engine for Growth initiative, the UK Government aims to create hundreds of thousands of jobs and add £34 billion to the economy by 2030. Universities play a critical role.
We are a key partner in Midlands Innovation – a collaboration of six leading universities in the heart of the UK. Its aim is to drive cutting-edge research, innovation and skills development that will grow the high-tech, high-skilled economy of the Midlands and the UK.
Focusing on our strengths
We will play to our strengths. By aligning our focus to key sectors, many of which have been targeted by the Government for growth, we can secure investment in the best research and facilities and retain and attract top experts and research staff – a winning formula for innovation.
We have launched five new Research Institutes aligned with these strengths – an integral part of our discovery-led enterprise and innovation activity.
Some of our strategic projects
Space Park Leicester
We have ambitious plans to build Space Park Leicester - a new international centre for the analysis and commercialisation of space-enabled data and space mission development.
We are a partner in the UK’s first Life Sciences Opportunity Zone (LSOZ). In the heart of Leicestershire, Charnwood will provide a fully integrated drug discovery and development facility that supports drug development projects from target identification through to registration.
Our new Innovation Hub is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and works closely with industry to accelerate innovation by turning research and business ideas into innovative products, services and processes.
