Space, Life Sciences, Innovation and Collaboration – Enabling and Delivering Dynamic Leicestershire Ecosystem and Successful Innovations

This year’s Leicestershire Innovation Week will take place between 21 June - 26 June and features a packed programme of engaging events showcasing some of the best in innovation our county has to offer. Covering subjects as diverse as space, self-driving vehicles, food and drink, life sciences, creative industries, service jam; women, young people and their unique approach to innovation, Innovation Week will provides new insights, tools, contacts and an overview of how to navigate the innovation landscape and cutting-edge research to elevate your business.

Leicestershire Innovation Week is an annual festival celebrating business innovations, big and small, from across our region. Supported and driven by the University of Leicester.

Now in its fourth year, the 2021 programme features a wide range of events many of them led by or in partnership with the University of Leicester beginning with the showpiece launch event; ‘First Steps to Business Blast Off: Spotlighting Opportunities with Space Park Leicester’, Developing the next generation of Diagnostics in the health sector and ending with a special Innovation Friday Online - ‘Your Competitors Are Adapting, Are You?’

First Steps to Business Blast Off at Space Park Leicester

Monday 21 June 8.30am

University of Leicester in partnership with the LLEP (Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership) will be kicking off Leicestershire Innovation Week 2021 with a multi-stakeholder showcase of the opportunities in the Space Sector further enabled by the opening of Space Park Leicester.

The launch event will tell the story of Space Park Leicester from inception to operation, detail the future opportunities for commercial engagement, growth, R&D and Innovation funding opportunities and outline the ways in which Space Park Leicester will benefit the local economy.

Attendees will hear from University of Leicester researcher and winner of BBC2’s ‘Astronauts: Do You Have What it Takes?’ Dr Suzanne Imber on her life in space and the exciting future possibilities the sector enables in education, carers and innovation and Rachel Tidmarsh, the Managing Director of the UK’s leading aerial survey company Bluesky International Ltd based in Leicester who will detail her successful use of space enabled data and collaboration with the University of Leicester.

‘First Steps to Business Blast Off: Spotlighting Opportunities with Space Park Leicester’ will conclude with a Fireside Chat panel Q&A session led by our very own Chas Bishop, Chief Executive of the very successful National Space Centre and a great champion for all things space to ask their questions and begin their own innovation journeys.

Developing the Next Generation of Diagnostics in the Health Sector

Monday 21 June 1.00pm

The University of Leicester Life Sciences Accelerator Team will deliver a session on ‘Developing the Next Generation of Diagnostics in the Health Sector’, the session will showcase the range of diagnostic developed by University of Leicester clinicians in partnership with industry as well as putting a spotlight on , new R&D opportunities and funding routes to de-risk industrial innovations.

This event will provide attendees with an introduction to Leicester’s life sciences strengths in device development, diagnostics, drug discovery, imaging, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and clinical trials and spotlight the novel ways they have been applied to enable effective, efficient detection of illnesses including cancer, COVID-19, sudden cardiac death risk and TB.

The ‘Developing the Next Generation of Diagnostics in the Health Sector’ session will conclude with a panel discussion by all speakers and collaborators from the Charnwood Campus Innovation Centre and MediLink East Midlands.

Meet the Innovators at Harborough Innovation Centre

Harborough Innovation Centre in partnership with the University of Leicester will be hosting Meet the Innovators at Harborough Innovation Centre. Innovation is county-wide and this event celebrates the many different types of innovation and innovators within Market Harborough and Harborough’s iconic Innovation Centre.

A great chance to identify great innovators, learn about their innovations and innovative businesses as well as engage with these companies, Harborough Innovation Centre and University of Leicester teams them to develop new collaborations.

Leicester start-ups and innovators – what’s next?

Leaders from the University of Leicester’s ‘Start-up Leicester’ Accelerator will showcase a variety of local start-up businesses who have benefitted by engaging with the programme.

At the ‘Leicester Start-ups and Innovators – What’s Next?’ session, attendees will hear from local innovators whose innovations are enabling real-world benefits to industry nationwide including; improved SME customer retention, opportunity identification for healthcare professionals, enabling card-less payments to eCommerce businesses, social media leveraging for income generation in hospitality and educating organisations about their environmental impact and facilitating positive change.

If you’re thinking of starting your own small business, are a recent start up, or you’re an investor, this session will certainly be of interest.

Innovation Friday Online – ‘Your Competitors Are Adapting, Are You?

The Leicester Innovation Hub team will be hosting a special Innovation Friday event titled ‘Innovation Friday Online – ‘Your Competitors Are Adapting, Are You?’

This dynamic, engaging event is jointly delivered in partnership by the three ‘beacon’ Leicestershire universities, The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), and Innovate UK and will highlight the power or industry-university collaborations to enable businesses to gain competitive advantages and stay ahead of the competition through innovation. This will be a discussion led session via breakout rooms to highlight how the attendees are innovating (adapting) and collaborating to stay ahead.

From entrepreneurs via start-ups to established businesses and from students and academics to enterprise professionals, the ‘Innovation Friday Online – ‘Your Competitors Are Adapting, Are You? event will highlight new opportunities to stay ahead of the competitors.
