Our comprehensive degree programme is designed to provide you with the specialist knowledge and skills needed to excel as a human resource (HR) professional, while also exploring the critical relationship between the organisation, managers and the workforce, and the role of HR.  Throughout the course you'll be supported to think critically, identify and analyse HR and organisational problems and evaluate potential solutions to real-world issues.

You will gain a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of managing people in order to drive change in organisations, adapt to change, manage people and evolve their skills to shifting organisational and labour market trends.  You'll explore how these elements contribute to the overall success of an organisation.

In addition you'll develop the ability to critically evaluate HR theories and practices and learn how to apply evidence-based thinking to real-world HR challenges.  You'll also develop practical transferable skills, enhancing your oral and written communication, problem-solving abilities and teamwork skills.

Our course is designed to prepare you for a successful career in HR management and training with hands-on projects that mirror real-world scenarios.  You'll graduate with the confidence and competence to make a significant impact in any organisation across the world.

During the course you will be empowered with the expertise, knowledge and skills needed to pursue a career in HR.  Our course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) - the professional body for HR and people development, which further ensures the knowledge and skills acquired by our graduates align with the expectations of the profession and the profession map.  You'll also have the opportunity to gain a Level 7 CIPD qualification at the same time as studying your MSc Human Resource Management and Training (subject to paying student membership costs to CIPD).

Entry requirements

A good UK honours degree or its equivalent, or a postgraduate diploma from a recognised institution, or a relevant graduate level professional qualification.

English Language Requirements

IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. If your first language is not English, you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. If you do not yet meet our requirements, our English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers a range of courses to help you to improve your English to the necessary standard.

Teaching and learning

Teaching

You will spend 8-10 hours each week in timetabled sessions - around 8 hours of lectures and 2 hours of seminars or small group work in semester one and two.  In term three, the Research Methods and Dissertation module us taught in a three-week block and then you'll work one-to-one with a supervisor on your dissertation for the reminder of the term.

Taught sessions draw from real-world situations and contemporary issues impacting and shaping human resource management and training.  You will be given a comprehensive grounding and critical understanding of human resource management and training topics including:

  • Organisational functioning
  • Management structure and frames
  • Labour relations
  • Workplace learning and employee development
  • New forms of work
  • Worker experiences of work
  • Life and environment
  • Managing change
  • Organisational performance

Lectures will provide you with the framework and foundational knowledge for each subject, whilst seminars - held in small groups - provide you with the opportunity to discuss key ideas with your tutor and fellow students.  A variety of teaching methods are used with the aim of creating a stimulating environment in which you are encouraged to develop your learning skills and to actively engage and participate in your learning process.

Independent learning

When not attending lectures, seminars and other timetabled sessions, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study.  Typically, this will involve reading academic articles and books, engaging with practice through our local HR networks, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library, and preparing coursework assignments and presentations.  To help with your independent learning, you'll be supported with online materials, access to our library and learning spaces across both the central University campus and Brookfield - the School of Business campus.

Assessment

You will be assessed during each module by a variety of coursework assignments.  Assessment methods are varied to allow you to develop a range of academic and transferable skills throughout your course, including individual essays, online timed assessments, presentations and group activities.

Your final piece of assessed work is a 10,000 word dissertation.
