2025

1-3 July 2025

Workshop Statistical Mechanics of the Climate System and of Ecosystems, a StatPhys29 Satellite. The ongoing climate crisis and mass extinction are extremely serious challenges faced by humanity. A rapidly evolving and increasingly interdisciplinary scholarship is addressing causes, impacts, and potential solutions or at least adaptation and mitigation measures. Our initiative wishes to explore this exciting field and to bring together a group of diverse scientists. We invite contributions on a wide range of topics from and around statistical mechanics, including large deviation theory, extreme events, response theory, nonlinear dynamics and chaos, diffusion processes, pattern formation, metastability, early-warning indicators, reduced order modelling, interpretable machine learning, with a special focus on the climate system and ecosystems. Contributions of methodological nature are also welcome. Abstract submissions can be performed as part of the registration process. The event is partially supported by the American Physical Society, by the London Mathematical Society, and by the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences, and organised by Valerio Lucarini, University of Leicester, Lesley De Cruz, Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Pedram Hassazadeh, University of Chicago, Sergei Petrovskii, University of Leicester, and Ulrike Feudel, University of Oldenbur.

10-11 June 2025

'Mathematical Methods for Wave Problems' workshop, hosted by the Research Group on Scientific Computing and Applications. The meeting brings together researchers working on mathematical aspects of wave problems to share expertise and explore possibilities for future collaborations. The event hosts six plenary talks by invited speakers and contributed talks, with ample time for discussions. The workshop also hosts an IMA East Midlands Branch dinner event on 10 of June at 7.00pm. 2024

8 October 2024

The AI and applications group, led by Professor Huiyu Zhou, hosted a visit by Nicola Dunkin of OSRL (Oil Spill Response Ltd) on 8th October 2024. OSRL provides international capabilities to respond to oil spills wherever they may occur in the world, by providing preparedness, response, and intervention services. OSRL has 37 years of responding to oil spills efficiently and effectively globally, to mitigate the impact on communities and the environment and with a vision to lead the way, applying good practice and continuous innovation to spill response.  The group members discussed a number of potential problems related to using computer image analysis to remotely outline suspicious oil spill areas and estimate the depth of oil spills.
