MedRACE projects
The BMA Charter for medical schools to prevent and address racial harassment was developed in response to minority ethnic medical students’ experiences of racial harassment and undermining behaviours. There was recognition that it can be hard for students to know what to do and who to talk to about it; the Charter sets out a clear structure that medical schools can adapt to meet the needs of their students.
The Charter offers the opportunity to not simply talk about, but robustly challenge racial harassment and take an innovative approach to student-staff partnerships that, whilst sometimes challenging, will effect real change. The data is clear, the composition of our student population is more diverse than ever (56% from ethnic minority communities in 2019/20), our teaching and support methods must embrace this diversity which brings opportunity and legitimate challenge.
