Dr Thong Cao

Thong is a Research Associate in the Leicester van Geest MultiOmics group at the department of Cardiovascular Sciences, University of Leicester. Thong obtained a PhD degree in Cardiovascular Sciences in 2015 at University of Leicester.

Thong’s research is focused on heart failure (HF), including Heart Failure with reduced Ejection Fraction (HFrEF) and Heart Failure with preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF). His work involves discovery of novel biomarkers in HF using mass spectrometry-based multi-omics (Proteomics, Metabolomics, Lipidomics, …) in order to understand insights into pathogenesis mechanisms of HF and identify new therapeutic targets for patients with HF. In addition, novel biomarkers can be used for early diagnosis, risk stratification, prognosis and therapeutic guidance (Precision medicine). The main focus of his studies is to identify clinical predictors and discover novel biomarkers and pathways as well as predictive models for improvement of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (Heart Failure with improved Ejection Fraction, HFimpEF) in patients with HFrEF. Early identification of patients with HFimpEF or persistent HFrEF would allow customise therapy to individuals in order to maximise the treatment benefits and improve poor outcomes in patients with HF, instead of the traditional one-size-fits-all treatment recommendation. Moreover, Thong is actively involved in many other projects such as other cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, respiratory diseases, sarcopenia, cancer, senescence, lifestyle, … .
