Profile

I am Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Leicester and an Honorary Consultant in the Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability at Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust.

I am also Academic Secretary of the Neurodevelopmental Psychiatry Special Interest Group, and an Executive Committee Member of the Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability Faculty at the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

My research interests include psychiatric epidemiology, autism, and intellectual (learning) disability.

Research

I am a member of the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey team, funded by NHS Digital via the Department of Health and Social Care, working with Professor Traolach Brugha and Ms Zoe Morgan (University of Leicester).

Other projects include investigating the use of Brain in Hand among autistic adults working with Professor Rohit Shankar (University of Plymouth) and funded by the NHS Small Business Research Initiative, and investigating the characteristics of adults with intellectual disability in receipt of multiple antipsychotic medications (funded by the Baily Thomas Charitable Fund).

Supervision

I am happy to supervise PhD students on topics relating to psychiatric epidemiology, autism, intellectual disability, and other neurodevelopmental conditions.

Teaching

I currently teach on the Integrated Care Block for University of Leicester Medical School where I am the Learning Disability Psychiatry Lead, as well as delivering teaching sessions on Mental Health and Mental Illness (Sociology Degree, University of Leicester), and Mental Health and Patient Safety (Master's in Quality and Safety in Healthcare, University of Leicester).

I have research supervision experience (University of Leicester) for undergraduate Biological Science project students, Master's students, and PhD students. 

I also have clinical supervision experience (Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust) for both core and higher trainee psychiatrists. 

I have experience in development of educational materials, including as co-editor of Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability Across Cultures (Oxford University Press, 2023), development of e-learning modules for Mind-Ed and the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and being an author/co-author of many academic textbook chapters.
