Profile

Sam is a Clinical Research Fellow in Gastroenterology, combining clinical practice with a strong focus on patient safety, quality improvement, and medical education. Since graduating with an MBChB in 2019, he has gained extensive experience working as a medical registrar in acute and general medicine and is currently working towards JAG accreditation in upper and lower GI endoscopy. Sam is also pursuing an MSc in Quality and Safety in Healthcare, which complements his current work on improving safety in endoscopic procedures.

Sam is actively involved in research aimed at enhancing safety in gastrointestinal endoscopy. As a lead researcher on the SCALE ENDO project, he studies the contributory factors, communication breakdowns, and adaptive capacities of clinical teams during endoscopy procedures. His research applies Human Factors frameworks to understand how healthcare systems can become more resilient and how teams can adapt in real-time to complex situations. This focus on quality improvement and reducing clinical errors aligns closely with his passion for advancing safe and effective healthcare delivery.

In addition to his clinical and research roles, Sam is committed to advancing healthcare education. Holding a PGCert in Medical Education, and as a Fellow of Advance HE (FHEA) and a member of the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME), dedicated to upholding high educational and professional standards. He has developed simulation-based training programs aimed at improving procedural safety and performance in gastrointestinal endoscopy, focusing on crisis management and error prevention. Sam actively integrates his research findings into these educational initiatives to ensure that training is aligned with current safety and quality best practices.

Sam has presented research at several international conferences, sharing his work on patient safety and quality improvement in healthcare. These presentations have contributed to global discussions on improving safety and reliability in healthcare.
