Profile

Jonathon Chambers FREng CEng FIEEE FIET FIMA DSc(Imperial) is a widely-experienced academic and research leader and an expert in adaptive signal processing and machine learning and their application in biomedicine communications and defence. He was awarded PhD (1990) and DSc (2014) degrees from Imperial College. He served as the Head of the Department of Engineering/School of Engineering within the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Leicester between 2017-2019.

Jonathon is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Newcastle and Loughborough University and has additionally held senior academic positions at Cardiff University King's College London and Imperial College.

He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2012 and was elevated to a Fellow of the IEEE in 2011. He is also a Fellow of the IET and Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA).

In 2021, with co-authors Dr Monika Roopak and Professor Gui Yun Tian from the University of Newcastle, he won the IET Networks Premium Award for the paper entitled, 'Multi-objective-based feature selection for DDoS attack detection in IoT networks' Vol. 9(3), pp. 120-127. In 2022, together with his co-authors Professors Yulong Huang and Yonggang Zhang from Harbin Engineering University, he was awarded with the 2018 IEEE Trans. Aerospace and Electronic Systems M. Barry Carlton Award for the work 'A New Adaptive Extended Kalman Filtering for Cooperative Localization' Vol. 54(1), pp. 353-368, after being the runner-up for the 2017 award.

Research

Jonathon has secured more than 30 research projects from industry and government to the value of more than £12M. He was the Director of one of the two Dstl/EPSRC University Defence Research Collaboration consortia LSSCN which ran between 2013 and 2018. He has co-authored two research monographs with Wiley one in non linear adaptive signal processing and a second in EEG signal processing the second edition of which will appear in 2021 entitled EEG signal processing and machine learning and has published more than 600 other scientific works including more than 200 journal papers and has steered approaching 100 researchers to PhD graduation.

He has served as an Associate Editor/Senior Area Editor for IEEE journals including IEEE Trans. Signal Processing for more than ten years and was a Co-Technical Programme Chair for the IEEE flagship conference in Signal Processing ICASSP held in Prague 2011. He is currently an Area Editor in Communications Signal Processing for Digital Signal Processing and Subject Editor-in-Chief for Electronics Letters. He was additionally a member of the organising committee of ICASSP 2022 which will be held in Singapore.
