I am a Biotechnologist from the University of Salamanca (Spain) and I undertook my PhD in Health Sciences at the University Hospital Nuestra Senora de Candelaria (Spain). Here I studied the genetics of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and variations in the microbiome of patients through genomic and metagenomic approaches. I have also been involved in research projects focused on the genetics of other complex respiratory diseases, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and asthma.

I joined the Genetic Epidemiology research group in April 2021 as a Postdoctoral Fellow to further develop my research in the field of ARDS and pulmonary fibrosis genetics. 


Genetic and environmental factors influence COVID-19 susceptibility and outcomes, including the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), characterized by pulmonary infiltrates and severe hypoxaemia, and short- and long-term pulmonary fibrosis (i.e., lung scarring). These lung pathologies have a high mortality and there are no specific treatment options or effective prognostic methods for patients.

I currently hold a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowship to perform a genomic epidemiology study of ARDS and pulmonary fibrosis in patients with COVID-19. The main aims of this study are 1) to identify novel genes and biological pathways that may represent new therapeutic targets leading to development of new drugs and 2) to develop risk prediction models, which could enhance patient stratification for those at increased risk of lung sequela.
