New classes introduced at the University’s Jo Williams physio clinic

The Jo Williams Physio Clinic

A student led physiotherapy clinic at the University of Leicester is expanding its services.

The Jo Williams Clinic, based in the Maurice Shock building, at the heart of the University, successfully launched in September last year.

Open to the public alongside staff and students at reduced rates, it offers quick and affordable access to physiotherapy services at just £10 per session.

Now it is introducing Friday classes – for those aged 16 years or over. The lower limb rehab class, with an emphasis on return to sport, is suitable to those who want to improve strength, mobility and balance or return to sport after injury.

This small group class will take place every Friday from 10-11am starting 17 January where attendees can expect to learn more about exercises to help them on their journey to full fitness. The class costs just £5.

In addition, ‘A Dose of Dance Class’ will take place every Friday from the same date between 2-3pm. Designed to be a fun and creative movement session led by experienced dance practitioners and supported by physiotherapists.

Aimed at anyone wanting to improve their fitness and mobility, it is suitable for those with long term health conditions, including Parkinson’s, Dementia, and Stroke and costs £5 per session.

Associate Professor Charlotte Carter-Lang, Head of the Jo Williams Clinic and Practice Education Lead for the School of Healthcare, set up the clinic in memory of her late friend.

She said: “The clinic is going from strength to strength since it opened. The students have been working hard and have now developed specific classes for people who would like some support in a group setting – whether it’s learning more about how to get fit and stay strong, or getting out of the house and learning some new exercises in a fun environment. We’re delighted to be able to offer this and welcome anyone to come down and see what it’s all about.”

The Jo Williams Clinic is a purpose-built facility for patients with a variety of conditions including sports injuries, chronic pain, post-surgery or neurological rehabilitation needs.

Facilities at the clinic include treatment bays, a high spec gym area, treadmill with hoist if required, Watt bikes, a Motomed and more. It is located in the Maurice Shock Building on University Road.

Assessment and treatment is led by physiotherapy students from the University of Leicester and other local universities, giving them the opportunity to complete their placements under supervision from highly experienced clinical staff.

Appointments are weekdays from 8.30am to 3.30pm. To pre-book a consultation or join a class, visit the website or call 0116 2522040.
