Space Interpreters from University of Leicester join the National Space Centre

The National Space Centre will be welcoming students from the University of Leicester as University Space Interpreters starting in July.

Supporting the centre’s Space Communications team, they will be working throughout the centre and helping educate guests on the artefacts and activities available, as well as practicing skills such as presentation, blog writing, and developing their own hands-on demonstrations to offer to audiences.

Charlotte Isham, Education and Space Communication Manager at the National Space Centre said: “The National Space Centre are pleased to be able to offer the science interpreter scheme, for University of Leicester undergraduate students. The placement will provide students with 6 weeks of work experience, focusing on transferable skills such as presenting to an audience, how to adapt vocabulary to different audiences, planning and development of science activities for different audiences and communicating effectively.”

This is part of the University’s efforts to help develop their student’s skills for future careers as well as supporting students gaining valuable work experience over the summer break.

Professor Sarah Davies, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Science and Engineering at Leicester, added: “As a College of Science and Engineering, we are inspiring and developing the next generation of scientists and engineers and these are goals we have in common with the National Space Centre.

“As a Science Interpreter, our students have a fantastic opportunity to use their subject knowledge and gain experience in sharing the excitement of science through engaging directly with NSC visitors of all ages. Being able to communicate science effectively and enthusiastically is critical and an important employability skill. I am delighted that we can collaborate with the National Space Centre to provide our students with these fantastic opportunities.”

The Space Interpreters will be at the centre from the 15 July to the 1 September, and will be there to help guests with any questions they may have.
