Supporting our students this December
Students staying in Leicester this Christmas will be able to access a whole host of events and support, as part of a drive launched by the University of Leicester.
While the University has already tested a large number of students for COVID-19 in preparation for the Government-imposed December travel window (from 3 to 9thecember 2020), many students are due to remain in the city over the festive period.
Even though Christmas might feel a little different in 2020, the University of Leicester is hosting a number of events and giveaways to bring students some festive cheer and support throughout the month of December and beyond.
Professor Graham Wynn, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education at the University of Leicester, said:
“We know that some of our students will be remaining with us over the festive period, and their care and wellbeing very much remains at the forefront of our plans.
“That is why we have worked to create a full package of support to make sure students very much remain part of our University ‘family’ during the break between terms.
“We are immensely proud of all of our students in how they have responded to the ongoing challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we will do our very best to continue to provide the best care and support that we can.”
Students are encouraged to visit the Advent activities calendar in the build-up to Christmas with events and activities every day through December, before we offer help with New Year’s resolutions come January.
Our MyWellbeing app is also being updated with podcasts, habit trackers and more resources for the festive period, and the accommodation team have also opened up some of their virtual activities – like The Big Instagram Quiz, Get Cooking, and Bake and Decorate sessions – to students living away from halls.
Students are invited to get involved in the festive fun with a Christmas tree competition – and the chance of winning a £100 Amazon gift card – while hundreds have already entered prize draws on the @leicstudentlife Instagram page, where Uber Eats vouchers have been up for grabs.
The popular Life in Lockdown programme of events and support will continue, with weekly LetsDisko club nights (until 16 December) and mindfulness classes (until 14 December), while hundreds of game packs and food parcels have already been given away while a virtual sport offering has been helping students to stay active.
The Student Support team will continue to be available in December. To ensure the University is able to help any student requiring additional support or that is in need, extra counsellors have been recruited to offer in person and digital counselling consultations.
The University’s Accommodation team will be available 24/7 over the vacation period with site receptions remaining open to support students, as will the University’s Security team.
