Nick Cummins achieves double sporting success

Sports scholar Nick Cummins wins league with Leicester Tigers Wheelchair Rugby Team and gets selected for Great Britain.

University of Leicester History PhD student and sports scholar Nick Cummins was part of the victorious Leicester Tigers wheelchair Rugby Club who successfully defended their Division One title last weekend, going undefeated for the whole season.

Nick is also celebrating after he and two of his Leicester Tigers teammates were selected to play for Great Britain in the Wheelchair Rugby International Quad Nations tournament, being held at the Morningside Arena in Leicester from 1 to 3 March 2019.

The three-day tournament marks an important opportunity for Great Britain ahead of the 2019 European Championships in Denmark where Team GB will defend their title, and ahead of the World Wheelchair Rugby Challenge, which will be played alongside the Rugby World Cup in Tokyo in October.

Nick said: “It's a great achievement to win successive league titles and to go undefeated this season despite tough opposition. It's a sign that we are really cementing our status as the best wheelchair rugby team in the country. Hopefully, those of us who will go on to compete at the Quad Nations can take this success forward into that tournament.”

Great Britain will have two preliminary games on Friday 1 March and one on Saturday 2 March, with the playoff and final taking place on Sunday 3 March. Following the Quad Nations, Nick and his Leicester Tigers teammates focus will return to club duty, competing in the National Cup in May.
