Challenges faced by aspiring female headteachers
The University of Leicester’s Doctoral Inaugural lectures series continues on Wednesday 23 May, when two new speakers from the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities will share their research into the topics of education, and social relations.
Dr Laura Guihen, of the School of Education, will be delivering a lecture entitled ‘You’ve got to have fire in your belly to be a head teacher’.
Discussing her PhD research into equality issues in education, Laura will examine the career decision-making of women deputy head teachers over the course of the lecture. Laura’s PhD explores the ways in which women deputy head teachers who aspire to leadership roles perceive the secondary head teacher role. Most of the studies in this area focus on women who have already made the leap to headship.
Laura said: “The findings reported in this thesis may be of interest to potential head teacher aspirants as well as those tasked with identifying and training tomorrow’s leaders.”
The second lecture will be delivered by Dr Marco Checchi, School of Business, on ‘The primacy of resistance: An exploration of the organisational creativity of resistance exceeding its confrontational stance.”
Marco argues that resistance is not primarily about direct confrontation but about changing the conditions in which power operates by creating alternative social relations and alternative ontologies of existence.
Professor Dave Lambert, Doctoral College Director, added: “This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the breadth and wealth of postgraduate enterprise in Leicester. I hope to see many of you at what promises to be an exciting event.”
Commencing at 5pm, both lectures will be held in the George Davies Centre, Lecture Theatre 2, with a reception following the event. All University staff, students and members of the public are invited to attend. Entry is free, but seats must be booked in advance.
