Leicester grad part of team crowned champions of Britains first TV medical quiz show
Will Manning and Jon O’Doherty, both Leicester graduates, and James Richmond were the chosen three to put their skills and knowledge to the test as part of BBC 2's Britain’s Best Junior Doctors last week.
Becky Ayres, also a Leicester graduate, was part of the team from Kettering General Hospital.
During the quiz all three had to showcase their medical excellence as they tackled an array of rigorous questions, handling a mock A&E department and demonstrating their chosen specialism.
Will Manning, First Year Junior Doctor at University Hospitals of Leicester said: “When we were first asked to be on the program I was incredibly excited! It was something I’ve never done before and couldn’t wait to get stuck in. But then I started to realise the responsibility. We had to do Leicester’s Hospitals and the East Midlands proud – it was a daunting prospect!
“Especially as a graduate from the University of Leicester I didn’t want to disappoint my old Consultant tutors! It was a great privilege to represent the hospital and Leicester on National TV and I’m grateful for the opportunity.
“Being a part of Britain’s Best Junior Doctors was a great experience! The filming process and the quizzing were really fun but it tested us at times. We had some stiff competition but I think we rose to the occasion well and did our hospital proud.
“When they revealed that we had won the feeling of relief and happiness was brilliant. Meeting Jo Brand was a highlight for me – she was very friendly and genuinely interested in (and grateful for) all the work NHS staff do. I hope everyone has as much fun watching as we did taking part!”
The new quiz show was to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the NHS, which pitted teaching hospitals from across the country against each other.
Will, Jon and James have bought the accolade home where they are now returning to their learning with Leicester’s Hospitals and becoming fully trained doctors.
