Team Leicester continues to dominate the competition
Wednesday 25 April was a momentous day for Team Leicester as the men’s futsal team took home the BUCS Sport Trophy Final- a University of Leicester first.
The win was the culmination of a very challenging journey for the team, having been drawn to play against high-ranking teams such as Edinburgh University and Manchester Met. Beating Northumbria University at the semi-finals, the team progressed on to face the University of Bath in the final.
The team is captained by Alex Murphy and coached by Nimesh Patel. Nimesh said: “It was the perfect way to win a final, equalizing in the dying seconds to take the game to penalties showed great resilience from the players, I’m so proud of what they have achieved.
“Travelling up and down the country throughout the competition gave us the opportunity to become closer as a team, creating friendships to last a life-time. These memories will stay with me forever”.
Matthew Weir, Head of Sport & Active Life at Leicester, said: “The team’s success in the Trophy final yesterday afternoon has been due to the dedication of the students and coaching staff. Team Leicester continues to strive for new heights and this is a real statement of what can be achieved through focus and hard work.”
Steve Bayley, Sport Experience officer (performance) added: “Yesterday's win demonstrates that hard work and dedication has resulted in a number of Team Leicester sports teams challenging and achieving success against teams from higher ranked sporting institutions.
“Moving forwards we will be using yesterday’s success to inspire and demonstrate to our Team Leicester teams that success is achievable at every level of competition.”
The win follows Team Leicester’s success last month when they claimed the coveted title of Varsity Champion- a title our University has held every year since records began in 2000. The current score stands at 35 points to DMU’s 21.
