From black holes to ancient fossils innovative images highlight University research
The winners of this year’s Images of Research exhibition have been announced, highlighting some of the key research innovations currently taking place from across our academic departments.
The event, which took place on Thursday 9 February, saw staff, students and members of the public alongside a distinguished panel of judges vote for their favourite images depicting research. There were around 300 people visiting the exhibition, including staff, students and members of the public.
This year’s competition, which was open to staff entries for the first time, built on the Graduate School’s PhDepictions competition which showcases the photography of the University’s post-graduate researchers.
The winners are:
- Winner of the Best Postgraduate Researcher Image: Sara Thornton (Geography)
- Second Place for the Best Postgraduate Researcher Image (sponsored by the Students' Union): Rozita Adib (Molecular and Cell Biology)
- Winner of the Best Image from the College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology: Dr Damian Roland (Health Sciences). More information about Dr Roland's research is available here.
- Winner of the Best Image from the College of Science and Engineering: Professor Sarah Hainsworth (Engineering) with Graham Clark and Guy Rutty
- Winner of the Best Image from the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities: Dr Stevie-Jade Hardy (Criminology)
- People’s Choice Award: Dr Chris Nixon (Physics and Astronomy) ‘Star Eaters’
Provost Professor Mark Peel said: “In just fifty pictures, Images of Research conveys the richness, diversity and impact of University of Leicester research in a way that words alone could never do. Across every discipline, you can see the fascinating question that led to the research and the impact of the answer on how we think, act and feel.”
