MP highlights opportunities for Leicester graduates
On Friday 27 May, Member of Parliament for South Leicestershire, Alberto Costa, visited our University to meet with President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Boyle and tour the campus.
The University of Leicester, which gained its university status in 1957, is a top ranked research led university that employs over 5,000 staff and has over 18,000 students attending on a yearly basis.
Mr Costa said: “I was delighted to be invited to visit the University of Leicester earlier today. I am aware of its strong national and international reputation as a leading place of study, and I am very thankful to the Vice-Chancellor for meeting with me."
Professor Boyle said: “We welcome the opportunity to discuss with MPs the importance of the University’s mission and its impact on the region. Mr Costa’s priorities for South Leicestershire include a healthy economy and provision of opportunities for young people, supporting the NHS and championing education. The University of Leicester plays a central role in these areas through the education of students, the training of doctors and teachers and the delivery of professional development courses.
"We also welcome the opportunity to discuss with Mr Costa the importance of the forthcoming European referendum and why it is vital for Britain to be a part of Europe in order for universities to continue to excel and compete with the very best. For this reason it is vital that students register to vote for the elections on 23 June.”
Mr Costa concluded: “A significant number of my constituents both work and attend the university as a place of study and so I was very pleased to see the excellent facilities they have on campus. The government has a very effective strategy in creating an excellent job market for graduates to thrive and I hope to see many Leicester graduates taking up these opportunities in the future."
