Portrayal of Richard III captures spirit of the last Plantagenet

A college in Hawaii is holding a performance of Shakespeare’s Richard III which takes account of the discovery of the King’s remains in a unique and unusual fashion.

Students at Leeward Community College in Pearl City will be performing a reworked version of the play, in which Richard III will also be represented in the form of his ‘ghost’, providing a commentary on the events of the play.

The news was reported in Ka Leo O Hawaiʻi, the campus newspaper of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa which the College forms part of.

Last month, Eltham College in London also held a performance of Richard III, in which the events of the identification of Richard III’s remains were dramatised alongside Shakespeare’s play with props provided by the University.

Richard III will debut on Thursday, April 14 at 8pm in the Leeward Lab Theatre.
