Diabetes Professors back Jamie Oliver sugar campaign

Two of the country’s leading researchers into Type 2 diabetes have come out in support of Jamie Oliver’s latest health campaign, saying “it’s time to tackle the sugar generation”.

Professors Melanie Davies and Kamlesh Khunti, from the University of Leicester and the Leicester Diabetes Centre, have added their backing to the celebrity chef’s crusade to introduce a levy on sugary food and drinks.

Professor Davies, Professor of Diabetes Medicine, said: “We are supporting Jamie because we see first-hand the consequences of excessive sugar consumptions and believe it’s about time government made a stand to protect public health. We have a golden opportunity here – it’s time to tackle the sugar generation.”

Hosted at Leicester General Hospital, the Leicester Diabetes Centre is a partnership between the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and the University of Leicester.
