Parliamentary debates cite Leicesters research
The work of our University has been cited in two separate debates in Parliament.
At Westminster debates, research in our College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology has been cited twice in the same week. This follows the citation, earlier this month, of the work of researchers from our Department of Criminology.
In the House of Lords debates, research from our Department of Cancer Studies was cited. During the second reading of the Mesothelioma (Amendment) Bill moved by Lord Alton, there were 36 speeches, including one by Lord Prior of Brampton who said: “I can highlight that the NIHR is co-funding experimental cancer medicine centres with Cancer Research UK. These centres are supporting studies in mesothelioma. Money is also available through European Union research funding programmes. I am delighted that the University of Leicester is a partner in a successful bid for nearly €6 million for research on immunotherapy to treat malignant mesothelioma.”
Our University has also been cited for research which made global headlines. A report, led by Professor Elizabeth Draper and a team from the Department of Health Sciences, was commissioned by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership as part of the Maternal, Newborn and Infant Clinical Outcome Review Programme. It identified key steps for hospitals to improve care for pregnant mums and babies. Ben Gummer, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health, cited the work led by Leicester in a debate at Westminster Hall on World Prematurity Day.
